The Story: 2 Samuel 20
David’s army along with Joab, the Commander, were on the hunt for Sheba, who was a wicked man who decided to revolt against Israel. The army arrived at Abel Beth-maacah where Sheba hid. A woman emerged from the fortified wall to speak with Joab. She was a peaceable and wise woman who explained that the city had a mother inside and was a place where people received advice. Joab advised that they were only there for Sheba. She advised that they would deliver Sheba’s head over the wall. Joab agreed. The woman left Joab and spoke with the inhabitants of the walled city. The next thing Joab knew was Sheba’s head came over the wall.
The Lesson
The Bible doesn’t tell us much about this woman. We don’t know her name or anything about her profession or lifestyle. However, we learn that she was peaceable, faithful, and wise. Joab discerned that she would follow through on what she said. As a result, he achieved the plan of David.
Who we develop alliance with is of immense importance. Choosing people based on past relationships and not on the plan of God can lead to our demise. Isaiah 30:1 NIV speaks of this very thing. “What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,” says the Lord. “You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins.” Our intention and thought is not of sin when we make plans and build relationships. However, we increase the struggles in our lives when we devise plans and alliances that are contrary to God.
Jeremiah 29:11 states that He has an expected end for us. Therefore, He orchestrates people, places, and events to get us to the location at the appointed time. We prolong our arrival with our own agendas and alliances.
To follow the plan, seek the Lord Jesus and ask what the plan is. He often leaves the blueprint in the areas that bring us joy and we accomplish effortlessly. We call these things our side hustle or hobby. Once we know the plan, then we ask for destiny helpers. They’re the people like the wise women in 2 Samuel 20. Once they learn your plan, they provide a true assessment, offer assistance, and execute their part of the plan. They are truthful, peaceable, and wise. They support and rally around the plan.
With the aligned plan, the only thing left to do is pursue. Don’t stop for obstacles or naysayers. Continue in spite of who comes or goes. Press through the uphill challenges and the downhill blockades. No matter what continue until the finish line appears or God provides another step in the plan.
