The Work Must Go On

On this Labor Day, we think of our hard work and are excited about a day off. We work to earn money to support our lifestyles and survive. We labor continuously to support our habits and desires. There are moments when we only focus on our labor because our responsibilities are overwhelming and prices continue to rise. While there is a desire for rest, life says, “Work must continue.” Although life speaks some truth, work is not the only thing.

In Nehemiah 4, we see Nehemiah and his crew steady at work to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. They focused on the task at hand; however, naysayers ridiculed their efforts and questioned their abilities. Because of the barrage of discouragement, the workers knew that work alone wasn’t enough. They prayed because the task was overwhelming and fear increased within them. As a result, Nehemiah set watchmen for protection. The laborers became workers and warriors. Ultimately, some served as workers by day and watchers by night.

Nehemiah and his team provide us with insight when faced with insurmountable work and nagging naysayers. As we recognize the necessity to complete the work, we have a strategy for managing the work despite the pressure.

First, we are to pray. Psalm 127 lets us know that if God isn’t in it, we labor in vain. Therefore, we place God at the beginning to provide us with our assignment. With God in the middle, He strengthens us to pursue despite difficulty. Having God at the end enables us to thank Him for partnering with us to accomplish His plan. Therefore, prayer stabilizes us while we work.

Second, we are to watch. God doesn’t want us caught off guard. Temptation lurks to distract us from our work. This evil rears its head in the form of distraction and fear. Therefore, Matthew 26:41 admonishes us to “keep actively watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” To avoid temptation, watching and praying are a must for work to continue.

Third, the time has come to work. We sought the Lord for direction and we’re aware of the things that want to veer us off course. Now, we’re ready to put our hand on the plow and accomplish the will of God. With God at the beginning, middle, and end, we are sure to have everything we need to finish the work.
