Have you ever found yourself caught in the middle? Your options were either left or right. We have to pick a side. Both choices seemed okay; however, you had insight that made one choice better than the other. Despite this information, you choose option one because of its familiarity. Although our experience with option two is limited, we know that long-term effort it would’ve been the better option.
The Story: Isaiah 30:1-17
In Isaiah 30:1-17, the people of God found themselves in a similar place. They had experience with Egypt and sought to leave because of the mistreatment. The Lord rescued and provided for them after their exodus from that place. Despite all God did for them, they struggled with faithfulness to a holy God. They couldn’t leave behind the idols as they focused on the leeks and onions of the past. Although God cared for them, the people continued to fall prey to what was. God continued to woo and warn them with prophesies and warnings. Yet, the people rejected God at every turn. Although He wanted to give them quietness and rest, they chose bondage.
The Lesson
How often are we like the wayward people in Isaiah 30? We desire the things of God; however, the past keeps calling. We know where we came from including the good, the bad, and the ugly. Although we longed to leave the past and build on the future God designed for us, there’s something about the familiarity of what once was.
Do we return to the familiar or press forward into the future? Do we choose self or the Savior? By following the familiar, we choose ourselves. We become responsible for the outcome. Our hope lies in what was. Although we know God offers hope, the process comes with too many ups and downs. Unfortunately, the downs cause us to yearn for what we once knew.
On God’s side, we find rest and confident trust. Although we don’t know the each step of the process, we rest knowing that God is in control. He’s guiding and directing everything for our good. Through each circumstance, He’s removing the character flaws that no longer serve us and equipping us with strengths that we need for what’s ahead. On His side, we persevere from a place of victory.
Therefore, do we return to the comfort of yesterday or do we stand flat footed on what God said? We must pick a side. However, remember that God’s side is the best side.
Love it!
