Take It Away

Have you ever struggled with something for a long time? You tried everything you could to find freedom and relief. Despite your best efforts, you remained shackled to the burden. You begin to wonder if “this” will remain part of your life forever. Will God ever take “it” away?

The Story: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul revealed that he’s imperfect. He acknowledged that God gave him a thorn in his flesh to keep him humble. Because of his condition, he was unable to exalt himself. He prayed to God on multiple occasions to take it away, but God had other plans. God advised Paul that His grace was enough. Furthermore, God’s power was most effective in Paul’s weakness. As a result of God’s proclamation, Paul decided to celebrate his weakness because God’s power would be on display. He determined within himself that his suffering wouldn’t limit him. Instead, he saw his troubles as part of the cause of Christ; meaning, his weakness actually strengthened him. Through God’s strength, there was no need for God to take it away.

The Lesson

When we think about Paul, we marvel at all that he suffered for the cause of Christ. He persevered despite struggle and rejection. However, his strength didn’t come from doing everything right. Instead, he acknowledged his imperfections and allowed God’s strength to make up for what we lacked. Therefore, Paul serves as an example to us.

While we think we don’t have what it takes, God wants us to know that we’re more than capable of accomplishing what’s ahead (Ephesians 2:20-21). When we believe we’re limited by weakness, we only hinder ourselves. Once we acknowledge that God will not take it away, we can find acceptance knowing that it will work for us (Romans 8:28). If God won’t take it away, then we need it to remain humble and bring Him glory.

So now what?

  1. Pray about the weakness. We begin by bringing the matter to God. Acknowledge our weakness before Him. Ask for guidance on how to handle this thorn ~ (Psalm 73:26).
  2. Await His response. Allow God to settle the matter ~ (Psalm 27:14).
  3. Model Paul. Boast in our weakness and give glory to God. We survived because of God ~ (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  4. Continue representing God. In everything we do, do it as unto God ~ (Colossians 3:23-24).

Although “it” may not go away, rest assured we have everything we need to fulfill the plan of God.
