Is there something within you calling your name? Do your thoughts constantly flow to a particular idea or action? Could it be there’s a call to duty? What do you do with the call and how do you respond? One thing’s for sure – if there’s a call, someone’s waiting for an answer.
The Story: Ezekiel 2
In Ezekiel 2, God called Ezekiel to duty. He prepared to send Ezekiel to a rebellious people. From the beginning, He made it clear that the people rejected God and didn’t want to repent. Despite the stubbornness of Israel, God wanted Ezekiel to speak to them. He confirmed that from Ezekiel’s words, the people would know that they heard from a prophet. In addition, He admonished Ezekiel not to fear the people or their words. Although the people would appear overwhelming, Ezekiel wasn’t to be afraid. Instead, Ezekiel was to listen to the word of God. He wasn’t to act like the rebellious people but accept the call to duty.
The Lesson
Confession Time – I haven’t always acted like Ezekiel. I heard the call to my assignment, yet I refused because of fear. I felt unqualified for the assignment. However, a gracious God gave me another chance. Now, I respond to the call and accept the assignment. I’ve learned that the call isn’t about me, but about those I will help to answer their own call to duty.
Therefore, let’s learn from Ezekiel because each of us has a call. The call is our assignment and purpose. There are people waiting for what we have to offer and our refusal to accept the call hinders their progress. We don’t want to be held responsible for not answering the call. So how do we get into position?
- Know who called you. Did God call you or did you call yourself? If God called, He’s ready to guide you along the way. He also knows every aspect of the assignment. In addition, He knows what you need to fulfill it. When you call yourself, you pick assignments that are comfortable. However, you don’t know everything involved so you’re unequipped. Therefore, following God’s call puts you in a better position.
- Know the assignment. When God calls you, He equips you for the assignment. You already have what you need. When He calls us, we go in faith because we have God’s support.
- Know the rules of engagement. God lets you know that He’s on your side so you need not fear. Also, the fear is designed to prevent you from answering the call. Therefore, the fear is a distraction to keep you from fulfilling your assignment. Although the people may not welcome you, you’re called to duty. With the rules in hand, you can proceed because you’re equipped.
- Accept the call to duty. The only thing left to do is say yes.
God’s waiting to hear your answer for there are people in need of what only you can do.
