Have you ever felt like time ran out? You wanted to go back to school, but now you’re too old. It’s never too late. You wanted to start a business, but there’s no time left. It’s never too late. While you think you ran out of time, it’s just the beginning. Whatever you want to do, you can. It’s never too late.
The Story: Genesis 18:1-14
In Genesis 18:1-14, Abraham sat outside his tent and saw the Lord. He invited the Lord in for a meal. As Sarah prepared the cakes, Abraham placed the calf and some drinks before the guest, who inquired about the whereabouts of Sarah. Abraham responded that she was in the tent.
While Abraham spoke to the Lord, Sarah stood at the tent door listening. The Lord said that next year, Sarah would have a son. Because she and Abraham were old, she laughed within herself. She wondered how she could experience such things since so much had passed. However, the Lord asked Abraham about why Sarah laughed to herself. In addition, He asked if anything was too difficult or wonderful for Him to do. Therefore, when the time comes, she will have a son.
The Lesson
At some point, we’ve all been like Sarah. We watched the calendar turn and doubted the fulfillment of a dream. We set our goals based on the passage of time. However, it’s never too late. Just like Sarah, our age doesn’t determine our ability to acquire the promises of God. Unfortunately, we use time as the metric by which we determine what we can or can’t do.
However, the exchange between God and Abraham offers another perspective on who’s in control. God lets us know that nothing is too difficult for Him (Genesis 18:14). He determines the seasons (Daniel 2:21). Therefore, God invites us to work with Him (John 15:5; 1 Corinthians 3:9).
When we partner with God, we change our focus. Habakkuk 2:2 encourages us to write the vision and make it plain. The purpose of the writing is to set up a reminder of what God said and what we stand in faith for. We write to dismantle the doubts and align our thoughts with His. We write to encourage ourselves despite the passage of time. Therefore, we write to remind ourselves that it’s never too late.
Furthermore, Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us to wait for the vision though it takes a long time. There’s an appointed time. Although Sarah laughed, she indeed gave birth to a son (Genesis 21). While we may be laughing or doubting, God’s word and promises remain. It’s never too late.
