Passing the Torch

The time has come. The old is gone and everyone awaits the new. The table is set and your presence is all that’s missing. It’s your time and turn. “Are you sure? It’s me,” you ponder. Absolutely. They’re passing the torch to you. Therefore, it’s time to run your leg of the race. You got this!

The Story: Deuteronomy 31:1-13

In Deuteronomy 31:1-13, Moses spoke to the assembly of Israel. He advised that he wouldn’t cross the Jordan with them. In addition, he told them that God would cross before them to clear the way and Joshua would lead them. He also admonished them to be strong and courageous. He added that God will not fail them.

In addition, Moses spoke directly to Joshua. He reminded him to be strong and courageous. Joshua would indeed possess the land promised and give it to the people as an inheritance. Moses affirmed that God would go before Joshua and he needed not to fear.

After Moses finished speaking, he gave the law to the priests and elders. Furthermore, Moses told them to set a memorial every seven years. This act was important to remind the people about the law and teach the children about what happened in the past.

The Lesson

From this passage, we see the passing of the torch. Moses took the people as far as he could and the time was now for Joshua to lead. Now, it’s our turn. Someone is passing the torch to us now. We passed the tests and remained strong. We supported others and brought encouragement at the appointed time. Therefore, our name has been called.

Yes, the road ahead appears uncertain. There’s much we don’t know and the learning curve is wide. Nevertheless, it’s our time.

The words Moses gave to Joshua apply to us now. Therefore, we have the mantra for our next phase. “Be strong and courageous. It is the Lord who goes before you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or abandon you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:7-8). With this, we can step into the next because God is with us. We’re not relying on ourselves but God. Therefore, we accept the torch and say yes to the possibilities that lie ahead of us.
