When God Will Not Share His Glory
1 Samuel — Chapter 5 (ESV)
📖
In 1 Samuel 5, the Philistines have captured the Ark of the Covenant and brought it to Ashdod, placing it in the temple of their god Dagon as a trophy of war. Beginning in verse 3, something remarkable happens — twice the idol Dagon is found fallen on its face before the Ark, and the second time it is shattered, its head and hands broken off at the threshold. God then sends a severe plague upon the people of Ashdod (v. 6), and as the Ark is moved from city to city — to Gath and then to Ekron — the same divine affliction follows (v. 8-12). The chapter powerfully demonstrates that God is not a defeated deity; He is sovereign even in enemy territory and will not share His glory with false gods. For the individual believer today, this passage is a vivid reminder that no idol, habit, or false hope can stand in the presence of the living God — and that He is always at work, even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
1 Samuel 5:3 (ESV)
"And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD."
Dagon's fall is not accidental — it is God making a statement without a single word spoken. The living God did not need Israel's army to defend His honor; He simply acted. This is a reminder that God's power is not diminished by your circumstances, your failures, or what the enemy seems to have taken from you.
1 Samuel 5:4 (ESV)
"But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him."
The broken head and hands of Dagon represent the total collapse of what the Philistines trusted in — wisdom and strength, both stripped away. Whatever you may have placed your confidence in apart from God, He gently and persistently brings those things to nothing so that He alone can be your foundation. His goal is never to harm you, but to free you from what cannot save you.
1 Samuel 5:6 (ESV)
"The hand of the LORD was heavy against the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory."
The phrase 'the hand of the LORD was heavy' reminds us that God is not passive or distant — He is active in the world, even among those who do not acknowledge Him. This verse calls you to take God seriously, not out of fear that paralyzes, but out of reverence that shapes how you live and what you choose to bow before each day.
1 Samuel 5:7 (ESV)
"And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, 'The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand is hard against us and against Dagon our god.'"
1 Samuel 5:11 (ESV)
"They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, 'Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.'"
What the Philistines wanted to remove, you are invited to welcome. The presence of God that terrified those who opposed Him is the same presence that brings peace, healing, and belonging to those who seek Him. Ask yourself today whether you are drawing near to His presence or keeping it at a comfortable distance in your daily life.

💬
  1. Is there anything in your life right now that has slowly taken the place of God — something you rely on or turn to first before turning to Him?
  2. How does it encourage you personally to see that God defended His own honor without any human help in this chapter?
🌱
Take a few quiet minutes this week to honestly identify one thing — a habit, a relationship, a worry, or a comfort — that may be functioning as a 'Dagon' in your life, and surrender it to God in prayer.
Each morning this week, begin your day by deliberately acknowledging God's presence before you check your phone, your schedule, or your to-do list — practicing the awareness that you live before the living God.
🙏
Lord, this chapter reminds me that You are not a god who can be put on a shelf or placed beside the idols of my life — You are the living God, and every false thing must fall before You. Search my heart and show me where I have given my trust, my time, or my first thoughts to something other than You. I invite Your presence into every corner of my life, not because it is comfortable, but because I know that is where I am truly safe. In Jesus name, Amen.
