A Hidden King and a Covenant Renewed
2 Kings — Chapter 11 (BSB)
Chapter Overview
Second Kings 11 opens with a dramatic act of murderous ambition as Athaliah, mother of the slain king Ahaziah, seizes the throne of Judah by destroying all the royal heirs (v. 1). But God's providential hand is at work, as the infant Joash is secretly rescued by his aunt Jehosheba and hidden in the temple for six years (v. 2-3), preserving the Davidic line through which the Messiah would one day come. Beginning in verse 4, the priest Jehoiada carefully orchestrates a covenant among the commanders and guards, revealing the hidden king and crowning Joash in a public ceremony that reclaims the throne for God's appointed line (v. 12). The usurper Athaliah is swiftly removed (v. 16), and the chapter closes with the people tearing down the temple of Baal and renewing their covenant with the LORD (v. 17-20), bringing peace to Jerusalem. This verse invites you to trust that what God is preserving in secret will come to light at exactly the right time.

"Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, presented him with the Testimony, and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and declared, “Long live the king!”"
The giving of 'the testimony' — likely the law of God — alongside the crown signals that true kingship in Israel was always bound to God's Word and covenant. Leadership and authority are meant to be shaped by Scripture, not by personal ambition. This is a call to let God's Word reign over every area of authority and decision-making in your own life.

"Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people."
After the drama of the coup, Jehoiada's first priority was not political stability but covenant renewal with God. This is the heart of revival — returning to the LORD and recommitting to belong to Him. It is a reminder that every restoration in your life must begin with a fresh surrender to God and a renewed declaration that you are His.

"Joash was seven years old when he became king."
A seven-year-old on the throne, shaped entirely by six years hidden in the house of the LORD — his formation happened before his visibility. God often prepares people in private long before He places them in public. The years of quiet faithfulness and formation are never wasted in God's economy.
