Walking in Truth and Love
3 John — Chapter 1 (BSB)
Chapter Overview
Third John is the shortest book in the New Testament, written by 'the elder' — the apostle John — as a personal letter to a beloved friend named Gaius (v. 1). Unlike the broader concerns of First and Second John, this letter is intensely personal, addressing real relationships and real tensions within a local church community. John opens with a tender expression of pastoral care, rejoicing that Gaius is 'walking in the truth' (v. 3-4) and commending him for the faithful hospitality he has shown to traveling missionaries (v. 5-8). The letter then contrasts Gaius with a troublemaker named Diotrephes, who loves to put himself first and refuses to welcome the brothers (v. 9-10), and lifts up a third figure, Demetrius, as a positive example of godly character (v. 12). For the individual believer today, this small letter carries a powerful reminder that faithfulness to God is lived out in the everyday choices of how we treat people, support God's work, and resist pride in our own hearts.
Key Verses
3 John 1:2 (BSB)
“Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.”
John's opening prayer reveals that God cares about the whole person — your body, your circumstances, and your inner spiritual life. This verse is a beautiful reminder that the health of your soul is meant to overflow into every area of your life. Take a moment to ask yourself whether your soul is truly well, because that is the foundation from which everything else flows.
3 John 1:4 (BSB)
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
John's greatest joy was not his own comfort or success, but knowing that those he loved were living faithfully before God. This verse invites you to consider whether walking in truth — in your words, choices, and daily habits — is the deepest aim of your own life. It also echoes the heart of your heavenly Father, who delights when you walk in step with His Word.
3 John 1:8 (BSB)
“Therefore we ought to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”
John calls every believer to actively participate in supporting those who go out for the sake of the gospel, whether through prayer, finances, or practical hospitality. Your support of God's work — even behind the scenes — makes you a 'fellow worker for the truth,' equally part of what God is doing. You don't have to be on a mission field to be on mission; faithfulness where you are counts deeply.
3 John 1:11 (BSB)
“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.”
After describing the harmful example of Diotrephes, John gives you a clear and simple charge: look for what is good and follow it. The patterns you choose to imitate shape who you are becoming, and John ties doing good directly to a living knowledge of God. Let this verse prompt you to honestly evaluate whose example you are following and what habits you are quietly adopting.
3 John 1:12 (BSB)
“Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.”
Demetrius is held up as someone whose life speaks for itself — his character is confirmed by people, by truth, and by John personally. This is a portrait of what a life consistently lived for God looks like: a reputation built not on self-promotion but on integrity. Ask yourself what kind of testimony your life is quietly building in the people and communities around you.
Main Themes
- Walking faithfully in the truth
- Generous hospitality as gospel partnership
- The danger of pride and self-seeking
Discussion Questions
- When you think about your own walk with God right now, what does it look like to 'walk in truth' in the most ordinary parts of your week?
- Is there someone in your life — a missionary, a pastor, a faithful servant — whom God might be nudging you to encourage or support more intentionally?
Personal Application
Choose one specific way this week to support someone who is doing God's work — whether through a note of encouragement, a financial gift, a meal, or a prayer offered intentionally on their behalf.
Take five minutes today to honestly reflect on whose example you have been imitating lately — in attitude, in speech, in how you treat others — and make one small adjustment to align your patterns more closely with what is good and true.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the simple and profound truth in this little letter — that You care about the whole of my life, my soul, my relationships, and the way I treat people around me. Help me to walk in truth today, not just in what I believe but in how I live, speak, and serve. Guard my heart against the pride of Diotrephes and help me instead to have the generous, faithful spirit of Gaius and Demetrius. May my life build a testimony that points to You alone. In Jesus name, Amen.
