Daniel — Chapter 10 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Daniel Chapter 10 opens in the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, where Daniel receives a deeply troubling vision and responds with three weeks of mourning, fasting, and prayer (verses 1-3). On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, while standing beside the great Tigris River, Daniel is met by a glorious heavenly messenger whose appearance is so overwhelming that Daniel's companions flee and he himself falls into a deep sleep, drained of all strength (verses 4-9). The angel touches Daniel and raises him to his knees, delivering one of the most personal and tender words of encouragement found in all of Scripture — 'O Daniel, man greatly loved' — assuring him that his prayers were heard from the very first day he set his heart to seek understanding (verse 12). The messenger then reveals that spiritual warfare in the heavenly realms had delayed his arrival, as he had been opposed for twenty-one days by 'the prince of the kingdom of Persia' until Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help (verses 13-14). The chapter closes with the angel strengthening Daniel for the word that is yet to come, reminding him and every believer today that the gap between a prayer offered and an answer received is not silence — it is a battle being fought on our behalf (verses 18-21).

Daniel's three weeks of focused fasting reveal the posture of a heart that refused to give up in prayer. This verse is a quiet challenge to the reader: how much do you want what you are asking God for? Persistence in prayer is not about earning God's attention — it is about aligning your heart ever more deeply with His.
Daniel 10:11 (ESV)
"And he said to me, 'O Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for now I have been sent to you.' And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling."
Before any revelation is given, Daniel is reminded of his identity — he is a man greatly loved by God. This is not a reward for his fasting but a statement of who he is before God. Whatever season you find yourself in, God speaks the same truth over you: you are greatly loved, and He comes to you in your trembling.
Daniel 10:12 (ESV)
"Then he said to me, 'Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your prayer was heard, and I have come because of your words.'"
This verse is one of the most comforting in all of Scripture for anyone who has prayed and waited. God heard Daniel on day one — not day twenty-one. If you have been praying and waiting, this verse is God's personal reassurance that your voice has not been lost in the noise; He heard you the moment you opened your mouth.
Daniel 10:13 (ESV)
"The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia."
This verse pulls back the curtain on an invisible spiritual reality — your prayers are not traveling into an empty universe, they are entering a realm where real spiritual conflict occurs. Knowing this should both humble and embolden you: the delay in an answer does not mean God is absent, it means the battle for your breakthrough is real and being actively fought.
Daniel 10:19 (ESV)
"And he said, 'O man greatly loved, fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage.' And as he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, 'Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.'"
Twice in this chapter Daniel is called 'greatly loved,' and here he is met with both peace and strength poured directly into him by God's messenger. This is a picture of how God meets His people — not just with information, but with the very grace needed to receive it. When you feel too weak to hear from God, ask Him to strengthen you to receive what He is saying.
