Hebrews — Chapter 3 (ESV)

Hebrews 3 opens with a bold call to 'consider Jesus' — to fix your full attention on Him as the Apostle and High Priest of your faith (v. 1). The author draws a careful comparison between Moses and Jesus, honoring Moses as a faithful servant in God's house while elevating Jesus as the Son over that house (v. 3-6). This distinction matters enormously: Moses pointed forward to something greater, and Jesus is that greater thing. Beginning in verse 7, the chapter shifts into an urgent warning, quoting Psalm 95 to remind the reader of Israel's wilderness generation — a people who heard God's voice and still hardened their hearts (v. 8-10). Hebrews 3:12 (ESV)
"Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God."

The danger isn't dramatic overnight collapse; it's a subtle drift toward an 'unbelieving heart' that stops trusting God's goodness and faithfulness. The phrase 'take care' means to watch yourself closely, to be honest about your own spiritual condition before the living God.
Hebrews 3:13 (ESV)
"But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called 'today,' that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin."
Sin is described here as deceitful — it doesn't announce itself honestly; it promises freedom and delivers hardness of heart. The antidote God prescribes is daily encouragement rooted in truth, keeping your heart soft and alive to Him. Every single day is a gift called 'today,' and every day is an opportunity to return to Jesus before your heart grows cold.
Hebrews 3:15 (ESV)
"As it is said, 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.'"
The urgency of the word 'today' appears again — God is not indifferent to timing, and neither should you be. Hearing God's voice is not enough on its own; the Israel of the wilderness heard and still rebelled. What God is asking for is a responsive, tender heart that says 'yes' when He speaks, not one that delays or grows resistant over time.
