📖 Chapter Overview

Mark 16 opens on the morning of the first day of the week, as Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome arrive at the tomb with spices to anoint Jesus' body (v. 1-2). Their worry about who would roll away the heavy stone is immediately answered when they arrive and find it already moved (v. 3-4). Inside the tomb, a young man in a white robe announces the stunning news: 'He has risen! He is not here' (v. 6), pointing to the very place where Jesus had lain. The angel commissions the women to go and tell the disciples, and promises that Jesus will meet them in Galilee (v. 7). Beginning in verse 9, the risen Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene, then to two disciples on a road, and finally to the eleven themselves, commissioning them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (v. 15). For the individual believer today, this chapter is the heartbeat of the Christian faith — the resurrection is not a distant theological idea but a living reality that sends every follower of Jesus outward with urgent, joyful news.

"But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, even though it was extremely large."

The women approached expecting an obstacle, but God had already removed it. This is a personal reminder that the barriers you fear most on the way to encountering Jesus often dissolve before you arrive. Trust God to move what you cannot move on your own.

Mark 16:6 (BSB)

"But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here! See the place where they put Him."

These are the most world-altering words ever spoken: 'He has risen.' The empty tomb is not an absence but a declaration — death has been defeated. Every time fear or doubt rises in your heart, you can return to this moment and remember that the One you follow is not in a grave.

Mark 16:7 (BSB)

"But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him, just as He told you.’”"

The specific mention of Peter — who had denied Jesus three times — is a breathtaking act of grace. Jesus went out of His way to make sure the broken, the ashamed, and the failing were personally included in the resurrection announcement. No matter where you have fallen, Jesus is already ahead of you, waiting.

Mark 16:15 (BSB)

"And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."

The Great Commission is not reserved for pastors or missionaries — it is the calling Jesus gives to every believer who has encountered the risen Lord. Your 'world' is the people around you every single day: your family, your neighbors, your coworkers. The gospel is meant to travel through your life.

Mark 16:20 (BSB)

"And they went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked through them, confirming His word by the signs that accompanied it."

The disciples obeyed, and the Lord worked with them — not before them or instead of them, but alongside them as they moved in faith. This is the pattern of the Christian life: you step out in obedience, and God confirms His word through your faithfulness. You are never alone when you go in His name.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Father, thank You that the tomb is empty and that Jesus is alive — not just as history, but as my living Lord and Savior today. Forgive me for the times I have lived as though the resurrection changes nothing, and fill me with the joy and courage that only comes from knowing death has been defeated. Like Peter, I have failed and fallen, and yet Your grace reaches me by name and calls me forward. Send me out this week with the good news living in me, and go with me just as You promised.
