Worthy Is the Lamb
Revelation — Chapter 5 (ESV)
📖
Revelation 5 unfolds in the throne room of heaven, where John weeps at the sight of a sealed scroll that no one seems worthy to open — until the Lion of Judah, who is also the Lamb that was slain, steps forward to take it. This chapter is set within John's sweeping heavenly vision (chapters 4–5), serving as the dramatic turning point between the worship of God as Creator (chapter 4) and the unfolding of redemptive history through the scroll's seals. The imagery draws deeply from Jewish apocalyptic tradition and Old Testament prophecy, presenting Jesus as both conquering King and sacrificial Savior. For believers today, this passage is a breathtaking reminder that history is not out of control — it is held in the hands of the risen, reigning Christ who alone is worthy.
Revelation 5:5 (ESV)
"And one of the elders said to me, 'Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.'"
This verse brings John — and us — from despair to hope in a single sentence. The titles 'Lion of Judah' and 'Root of David' are rich messianic images from Genesis 49 and Isaiah 11, declaring that Jesus fulfills every Old Testament promise. The word 'conquered' reminds us that Christ's victory was already won, grounding our confidence not in present circumstances but in a finished triumph.
Revelation 5:9-10 (ESV)
"And they sang a new song, saying, 'Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.'"
The 'new song' is not simply a new melody but a new declaration of salvation — the fulfillment of what the old covenant always pointed toward. The universal scope of Christ's redemption — 'every tribe and language and people and nation' — shatters any narrow notion of the gospel and calls the church to a global vision. The identity given to God's people as 'a kingdom and priests' echoes Exodus 19:6, showing believers their high calling to represent God to the world.
Revelation 5:12 (ESV)
"saying with a loud voice, 'Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!'"
This sevenfold acclamation — seven being the number of completeness in biblical literature — declares that Jesus is worthy of absolute and total praise. Every category of greatness that human beings chase after is ascribed fully and rightly to the Lamb alone. This verse invites believers to reorient their hearts, recognizing that true power, wealth, and honor find their source and summit in Christ.

💬
  1. John weeps when no one is found worthy to open the scroll. What does this moment reveal about the weight of human despair, and how have you personally experienced that kind of hopelessness before encountering Christ?
  2. Jesus is described simultaneously as the 'Lion of Judah' and as a 'Lamb standing, as though it had been slain' (v.6). What do these two images together tell us about the nature of Jesus and His victory, and which image speaks more deeply to you right now?
  3. The new song in verses 9-10 celebrates that Christ ransomed people 'from every tribe and language and people and nation.' How does this global vision of the gospel challenge or expand the way your group thinks about evangelism and the church?
  4. The heavenly beings in this chapter respond to the Lamb with spontaneous, extravagant worship. What do you think genuine, whole-hearted worship looks like in your own daily life — and what gets in the way of it?
  5. If Jesus truly holds the scroll of history in His hands and is worthy to open it, how should that truth shape the way you face uncertainty, fear, or suffering in your life right now?
🌱
Choose one attribute of Christ celebrated in this chapter — such as His power, wisdom, or worthiness — and make it the focus of your personal prayer and worship every morning this week, thanking God specifically for that quality.
Identify one person in your life who has not yet heard the gospel, and commit to praying for them by name each day this week, reminded by Revelation 5 that Christ's blood was shed to ransom people from every nation, including those closest to you.
🙏
Father, we come before You in awe of what Your Word reveals — that the Lamb who was slain is alive, reigning, and worthy of all praise. Forgive us for the moments we have forgotten that history rests in Your hands and have given in to fear or despair. Fill us afresh with the wonder of our redemption, that we too might join with every creature in heaven and earth and say, 'Worthy is the Lamb.' May that truth overflow from our hearts into our worship, our witness, and our daily lives this week. In Jesus' name, Amen.
