No One Is Righteous — But God Is Faithful
Romans — Chapter 3 (BSB)
📖
Romans 3 is one of the most theologically dense and personally convicting chapters in all of Scripture, yet it carries a message of breathtaking hope. Paul opens by defending God's faithfulness even when His people have been unfaithful, establishing in verses 3-4 that God's character never wavers no matter what. Beginning in verse 9, Paul levels the playing field entirely, declaring that 'both Jews and Greeks are under sin' and then marshaling a string of Old Testament quotations in verses 10-18 to prove that no human being on their own merits stands righteous before God. The declaration that 'there is no one righteous, not even one' (v. 10) is not meant to crush the reader but to clear away every false foundation so that the true foundation — God's grace — can be laid. The great turning point arrives in verse 21 with the words 'But now,' as Paul unveils the righteousness of God made available through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe (v. 22), freely given by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (v. 24). For the individual believer today, this chapter is a mirror that shows us who we truly are apart from Christ and a window that reveals who God is — the One who is both just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus (v. 26).
✦
“Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You speak and victorious when You judge.””
God's truth and faithfulness are not dependent on human consistency or approval. When you feel shaken by the failures of people around you — or even your own inconsistency — this verse calls you back to the unchanging character of God as your anchor. His Word stands firm regardless of what anyone else says or does.
“As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.”
This verse strips away every illusion of self-sufficiency and earned standing before God. Rather than being a word of condemnation, it is actually an act of mercy — God telling you the truth about your condition so that you will reach for the only cure that works. Accepting this honestly is the first step toward experiencing the freedom of grace.
“And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,”
The same righteousness that satisfies God's perfect standard is made available to you not through achievement but through faith in Jesus Christ. There is no ladder to climb, no level of goodness you must first reach — the gift is offered equally and freely to all who believe. This verse is the heartbeat of the gospel and the foundation of your standing before God.
“and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
Justification — being declared righteous in God's sight — comes to you as a gift, not a wage. The word 'redemption' carries the image of being bought out of bondage, and that is exactly what Christ has done for you on the cross. Every day you can live from this reality: you are not working to earn God's favor; you are living from the favor already given.
“He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.”
God did not compromise His justice to show you mercy — He satisfied His justice fully through the sacrifice of Jesus so that He could be both perfectly just and the one who makes you right with Himself. This means your forgiveness is not a technicality or a loophole; it is grounded in the most costly and righteous act in history. You can rest in a salvation that is completely secure because it rests on what God has done, not what you have done.
🧵
  • Universal human sinfulness and need
  • The unwavering faithfulness and righteousness of God
  • Justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone
❓
  • When you read that "there is no one righteous, not even one," what area of your life does God's Spirit quietly point to as a place where you still tend to trust in yourself rather than in His grace?
  • How does knowing that your right standing before God is a free gift — not something you earned or could lose by your own effort — change the way you approach Him today?
🌱
→Take five minutes this week to sit quietly with Romans 3:24 and let the word 'gift' sink in. Every time you feel the pressure to earn God's acceptance through your performance, return to this verse and speak it out loud as a reminder of where your standing truly comes from.
→Choose one relationship this week where you can extend undeserved grace to someone who has let you down — letting the truth that God was faithful even when His people were unfaithful (v. 3-4) shape the way you treat others.
🙏
Father, I come before You acknowledging what Romans 3 makes unmistakably clear — that on my own I fall far short of Your glory and have no righteousness of my own to offer. Thank You that You did not leave me there, but instead provided the righteousness I could never earn through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Help me to stop striving to earn what You have already freely given, and to walk today in the freedom of a person who has been fully justified by Your grace. In Jesus name, Amen.
