Beloved and Belonging
Song of Solomon — Chapter 7 (BSB)
📖
Song of Solomon Chapter 7 opens with the Beloved's bridegroom offering a breathtaking head-to-toe celebration of her beauty, beginning in verse 1 with the elegance of her feet and flowing upward through verse 5 to the crown of her head. This extended poem of admiration, known as a 'wasf' in Hebrew poetry, reflects the ancient Near Eastern tradition of praising a lover through elaborate physical imagery — but its deeper spiritual resonance speaks of how God sees His people: wholly, tenderly, and with delight. The bridegroom declares in verse 6, 'How fair and pleasant you are, O love, with your delights!' — a cry of joyful satisfaction that mirrors how Scripture elsewhere speaks of God's rejoicing over His people (Zephaniah 3:17). Beginning in verse 10, the Beloved responds with one of the most powerful declarations of the entire book: 'I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me,' a statement of settled identity and belonging that deepens the earlier refrain of chapter 2. The chapter closes in verses 11–13 with an invitation to go out into the vineyards together, depicting intimacy not as passive reception but as active pursuit — a picture of the believer walking daily with God in fruitfulness and love.
✦
“How beautiful are your sandaled feet, O daughter of the prince! The curves of your thighs are like jewels, the handiwork of a master.”
The bridegroom begins his praise from the ground up, honoring every part of the Beloved as crafted and intentional. This verse invites you to consider that God's gaze upon you is not critical but celebratory — He sees you as the work of a Master's hand. You are not an accident but a carefully fashioned person whom God delights to behold.
“How fair and pleasant you are, O love, with your delights!”
This outburst of pure delight from the bridegroom captures a love that is wholehearted and joyful rather than conditional. Spiritually, it echoes the truth that God does not merely tolerate you — He is genuinely pleased by you through the righteousness of Christ. Let this verse quiet any voice that tells you God is disappointed in you; His posture toward you in love is one of joy.
“I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me.”
This verse is the Beloved's confident declaration of belonging and identity, and it is one of the most personally significant statements in all of Scripture. Notice the shift from earlier refrains — here she emphasizes not only that she belongs to him, but that his desire is directed toward her. This is a truth you can anchor your soul to: God desires relationship with you, pursues you, and calls you His own.
“Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside; let us spend the night among the wildflowers.”
The Beloved now takes the initiative, inviting her bridegroom into the everyday places of life — fields, villages, and vineyards. This is a picture of a faith that doesn't stay contained within sacred moments but invites God into the ordinary rhythms of your week. True intimacy with God grows when you bring Him into your daily life rather than compartmentalizing Him to Sunday mornings.
“Let us go early to the vineyards to see if the vine has budded, if the blossom has opened, if the pomegranates are in bloom— there I will give you my love.”
Rising early to go to the vineyard together speaks of eagerness, intentionality, and a desire to share the fruit of one's life with the beloved. For the believer, this verse is a gentle challenge to pursue God with the same early, deliberate energy — not out of obligation but out of love. It also promises that fruitfulness in your spiritual life grows in the context of intimacy with Him.

  • Is there an area of your everyday life — your work, your home, your routine — that you haven't yet invited God into the way the Beloved invites her bridegroom in verse 11?

🙏
Father, thank You that Your gaze upon me is one of love and delight, and that I am not just tolerated but truly desired by You. Help me to receive the truth of Song of Solomon 7:10 deep in my heart — that I belong to You and Your desire is for me. Teach me to bring You into every corner of my ordinary life, not just the sacred moments, and to pursue You with the same eagerness and joy shown in this chapter. In Jesus' name, Amen.
