Have you ever had tools you’ve always used, but this time they don’t do what you need? Have you had the right tool, but for some reason, its function was below standard? Sometimes what we once used isn’t fit for where we are now. As a result, we’re inadequately equipped.
The Story: Luke 5:1-11
In Luke 5:1-11, Jesus taught the crowd by the Sea of Galilee while the fishermen washed their nets. As the boats were by the seashore, Jesus entered the one belonging to Peter. Jesus asked Peter to move the boat a little from shore so He could continue teaching the crowd. After Jesus finished teaching, he told Peter to launch out into the deep and cast his nets for a catch of fish. Peter advised that they spent all night fishing and caught nothing. However, he would lower his net based on His Word.
As a result, Peter and the others lowered the net and caught so many fish that the net broke. They summoned the other boat to assist with the haul, which was so massive the boats began to sink. At this sight, Peter fell on his knees acknowledging his sin before God. In the end, Jesus told him and the other fishermen that they could become fishers of men.
The Lesson
Unfortunately, we find comfort in the familiar. Even when presented with new opportunities, we use tried and tested means. I once heard Pastor Aaron Houston say, “people use shore material for a deep water experience.” However, these tools can’t handle the new environment. Although Jesus told Peter to bring his nets, Peter’s recent experience said that one net would suffice.
So often we find ourselves following human wisdom. We lean to our own understanding of a situation and then find ourselves inadequately equipped for the assignment. Despite our ineffective preparation, God doesn’t allow us to lose the entire catch. Instead, He sends help to carry the load. Although our boats begin to sink, we safely arrive to shore. He has a plan for us. As a result, He used the deep water as a precursor to the mighty harvest coming from our own assignment.
Time to assess your surroundings.
- Is it time to launch out into the deep?
- Are you ready to move from the comforts of shore living?
- Has the time come to change your tools for the new environment?
- Is the new territory too large to handle alone?
- Are your co-laborers ready for new territory?
Count up the cost and ensure that you’re adequately equipped.
