Lesson Learned

Growing up, I occasionally heard the term “hard-headed.” This term usually followed after some rule I forgot or simply ignored. At the time, the characterization seemed appropriate. I experienced repeat cycles because I struggled to learn the lesson. Now, I see some pros of going against the grain and not always following the lesson. However, there are some areas where I want to receive a star for lesson learned. In life, we will have numerous opportunities to learn lessons and our ability to pass the test depends on having a solid foundation. For instance, we can’t apply the principles of multiplication without a solid foundation of addition and subtraction. Are you ready for lessons learned?

The Story: Luke 6:46-49

In Luke 6:46-49, Jesus taught his disciples about foundation. He told them not to call Him Lord if they don’t practice as He leads. For if they hear His words, they should follow. He compared the importance of following Him to the foundation on which a house is built. A house built on a rock withstands the rains and winds that beat against the house. However, the same can’t be said for a house built on sand. This type of foundation leaves the house susceptible to the weather conditions, resulting in collapse and ruin.

The Lesson

With the explanation from Jesus, we discover the importance of the type of foundation for lessons learned. With a soft and sandy foundaiton, we experience repeat lessons. We forget the lesson resulting in each encounter being a new lesson. We lack growth because we don’t have a foundation on which to build. Inevitably, we move with the trends or popular opinions. Therefore, we operate from a position of newness instead of growth.

However, a solid foundation equals growth and elevation. As any home builder would say, the higher the home, the deeper the foundation. We need deep roots in order for us to grow. This phase allows us to retain the lesson learned in one experience and apply the knowledge to future circumstances. We recognize warnings and shift course because of the lessons learned; therefore, we steadily advance.

To ensure steady progression in any area, our foundation begins with Jesus. He’s the Creator so He knows the plans He has for us. He’s a Leader and Guide if we allow Him. He desires to walk this life with us and He makes Himself available. The only thing left for us to do is to accept His invitation. By saying yes to Him, we will definitely have lessons learned.
