More Than Enough

Do you feel like something is missing? Do you have enough to start with or even finish? Should you continue in this direction when the likes are low? These thoughts plague your mind as you consider your next steps. Is it possible that you actually have more than enough?

The Story: John 6:1-14

In John 6:1-14, Jesus went to the other side of the sea, but a large crowd followed Him. They came because of the many miracles He performed. While Jesus sat on the top of a mountain with His disciples, He noticed the crowd following Him. As a result, He asked Philip about where they could get food to feed the people. Philip responded with the high cost of feeding such a large group. Andrew, on the other hand, advised that there was a boy with five loaves of bread and two fish, but that was not enough for the crowd.

With the report from Andrew, Jesus told the disciples to help the people sit down. Although the group totaled about 5,000 men, Jesus took the boy’s lunch, gave thanks, and distributed the food. The people ate as much as they wanted. After the crowd finished eating, the disciples picked up the leftovers, which totaled 12 baskets.

The Lesson

From Jesus’s display of feeding the 5,000 men not including women and children, we can see that there was more than enough. Like Philip and Andrew, we see the lack – of resources, help, money, supporters, and even likes. We use the lack as confirmation that we shouldn’t begin. Even if we’ve made progress, we see the lack as too minimal to continue so we stop mid-stream. However, it’s possible that the lack is simply a comma and not a period. Meaning, the lack is temporary because we have more than enough to continue and finish.

Oh, my! I can feel the skepticism permeating through the screen. Nevertheless, the truth remains. We have more than enough. First, we have God. He takes what we have and multiplies it (2 Corinthians 9:10). Not only did He give us an assignment, but He also gave us what we need to complete it (Jeremiah 29:11; 2 Peter 1:3-4).

Second, we’re more than enough. We’re equipped with everything we need. There’s nothing missing. We don’t need to change our look or anything else. Therefore, we have everything we need to start and complete. Unfortunately, the only thing that can prevent us from starting is us. We hold the key to our success and forward progress. As a result, we must know and believe that we’re more than enough.

As a little boy’s lunch fed 5,000, what will we do with what we have? Just know – we have more than enough.
