I remember growing up wishing I had an older brother. In my young mind, he would come to my defense and be available whenever I needed him. He would be my hero. As God would have it, my wish was impossible. In life, we sometimes seek those who will come to our defense. Maybe a father, a brother, a strong parent, or even a spouse. Sometimes they come through for us, and sometimes they don’t. When we’re left alone, we wonder if anyone will come to our defense.
The Story: 2 Kings 6:8-17
In 2 Kings 6:8-17, the King of Aram came against the Israelites. Elisha warned the Israelites not to go to the place of war designated by the Arameans. As a result, the King of Israel followed Elisha’s advice. However, his advice displeased the King of Aram. He wanted to know who leaked the information, but his officers advised that Elisha was aware of everything, including the King’s words, which were spoken in private.
Because of the message from his officials, the King sent the officers to find Elisha and reported back to the King. Elisha’s servant saw the troops approaching, including horses and chariots. He notified Elisha as he was afraid of the army. Despite the seeming danger, Elisha tried to calm his servant and prayed that his eyes would be opened so he could see that there was more with them than against them. Immediately, the servant saw the hillside full of horses and chariots of fire.
The Lesson
When the servant saw the Aramean army, he was fearful. He wanted to know who would come to defend him and Elisha. Who would help in their time of need?
At some point, we all ask: who will be our defense? The Bible provides several scriptures confirming that the Word is our defense. Jesus is the Word! Psalm 94:22 reports that the Lord is our defense and refuge. In addition, Psalm 62:5-8 further elaborates that we need not move because God is our strength and refuge. Therefore, we can trust Him as our refuge and defense.
Deuteronomy 32:4 is a huge support for us. The verse lets us know that God is our mighty defender, who is perfect and just in every way. He’s also faithful and true, which means that everything He does is right and fair. As a result, God is our great defense.
Now that we know who has our back. Will we allow God to defend us? Abraham loved God but he had a few moments when he didn’t trust God as his defense. Even Moses had a moment when he didn’t trust God to defend him. However, Mary, the mother of Jesus, trusted God as her defense. She looked beyond the potential backlash and proclaimed that she wanted whatever God wanted for her. So how about us? Are we ready to surrender to God as our defense? Relinquish our plans for His? Yes, it means the best Supporter ever. On the other hand, no means we’re going solo.
So, will God be your defense?
