Tested Beyond Limit

“How much more? How long must I deal with this? I can’t take anymore, Lord. Free me because I can’t do this anymore.” This cry has been made by us on more than one occasion. With each cry, we knew we had reached our limit. We were at the breaking point. However, God’s miraculous grace came through and rescued us. Once we overcame that, we faced another trial. Surely this is it. Again, we cry, “We’re tested beyond limit.” Will we survive this time?

The Story: Genesis 37:18-41:57

In Genesis 37:18-41:57, Joseph went to look for his brothers at the behest of his father. At the sight of Joseph, his brothers planned to eradicate him from their lives. First, they threw Joseph into a pit. As he begged for his release, they sold him into slavery. His excitement was brief because his release was temporary. Second, Potiphar’s wife attempted to sleep with Joseph when accused him of rape when he declined. Before he could adjust to his new location, his boss’ wife had another agenda which landed him at the bottom. Third, he was placed in prison. While in prison, Joseph became in charge of the prisoners and expected his release soon. Yet again, the person he trusted forgot about him. Eventually, the cupbearer remembered him and his godly insight elevated him to second in command.

The Lesson

In these verses, we see that Joseph was tested beyond limit. Each time he survived one hurdle, there was another one even greater. He had multiple opportunities to give up and throw in the towel. Yet, he persevered. He held on to the dreams that seemed far from his ever declining reality. Nevertheless, he didn’t focus on the surmounting tests. His eyes were on God, which resulted in promotion after promotion.

When we read about all of Joseph’s tests, we see him tested beyond limit. Betrayal by family, attempted assault, false allegation, and forgotten when he was already down. Oh, the tests. Each juncture offered the opportunity for him to quit. He could’ve declared that he reached his limit. However, he pressed on.

I believe that Joseph persevered because although the tests were beyond his limits, they weren’t beyond God’s. Nothing can overtake or defeat God. When we’re ready to give up, we must remember that we always have reserves. He always have enough capacity for everything we experience.

If we learn to rely on Him in the beginning, we can last longer in the trial. God’s grace is sufficient for us because His strength shines when we’re weak (2 Corinthians 12:9). We know God’s in control so whatever He allow us to experience, He has us in His hands (Job 13:15). He’s with us in every challenge and circumstance (Psalm 46). We regain strength when we find ourselves in the secret place (Psalm 91).

Yes, the test is beyond your limit, but it’s not beyond God’s!
