Building on the Right Foundation
1 Corinthians — Chapter 3 (BSB)
📖
In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul confronts the Corinthian believers about their spiritual immaturity, which was showing itself in jealousy and division over which Christian leader they preferred to follow (v. 1-4). Paul reframes the issue by reminding them that he and Apollos were simply servants doing different parts of God's work — one planted, one watered — but it is God alone who causes the growth (v. 5-9). He then shifts into a powerful building metaphor, describing the church as God's temple and himself as a wise master builder who laid the foundation, which is Jesus Christ and no other (v. 10-11). Paul warns that every believer's work will one day be tested by fire — revealing whether what was built on that foundation was lasting or worthless (v. 12-15). The chapter closes with a sobering reminder that you yourself are God's temple, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and that God takes the holiness of that temple seriously (v. 16-17). For the individual believer today, this chapter is a call to examine what you are building your life upon, to let go of misplaced loyalties, and to invest in what will last into eternity.
✦
“for you are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and dissension among you, are you not worldly? Are you not walking in the way of man?”
Paul identifies jealousy and strife as signs of spiritual immaturity — not just behavioral problems, but indicators of where a person truly is in their walk with God. This verse invites you to look honestly at the relational patterns in your own life. Where jealousy or conflict tends to linger, God may be calling you to deeper surrender and growth.
“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.”
This verse is a liberating reminder that you are not responsible for outcomes that only God can produce in someone else's life. Your role is faithful obedience — planting seeds through your words, your love, your prayers — and then trusting God to do what only He can do. It frees you from both pride when things go well and despair when they seem not to.
“For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
Paul makes it unmistakably clear that Jesus Christ is the only foundation upon which a life — or a ministry — can be truly built. Everything else will eventually crack and crumble under the weight of time and eternity. This verse calls you to regularly examine whether your daily choices, priorities, and ambitions are rooted in Christ or quietly built on something else.
“his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work.”
There is a coming day when everything you have done with your life will be revealed for what it truly was. This is not meant to frighten you but to redirect you — to help you live now with eternity in view. The things done in quiet faithfulness for God's glory, even when no one was watching, are the things that will endure.
“Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?”
Paul's question — 'Do you not know?' — carries a gentle urgency, as if to say this truth should shape everything about how you live. You are not just a person trying to follow God; you are the dwelling place of the living God. That identity is both a breathtaking privilege and a profound responsibility, and it transforms how you think about your body, your mind, and your daily choices.
🧵
  • Spiritual maturity over worldly division
  • God as the true source of all growth
  • Building your life on the foundation of Christ
❓
  • When you look at how you spend your time and energy each week, what does it reveal about what you are actually building your life on?
  • Is there an area of your life where jealousy or strife has quietly taken root — and what might God be inviting you to release to Him?
🌱
→This week, identify one habit, relationship, or goal in your life and ask honestly whether it is being built on the foundation of Christ or on something else — then take one small step to realign it with what lasts.
→Each morning this week, pause for just a moment before your day begins and remind yourself: 'I am God's temple — His Spirit lives in me.' Let that truth shape one specific decision or interaction each day.
🙏
Father, thank You for the reminder that You are the one who gives the growth, and that I don't have to carry the weight of outcomes that only You can produce. Forgive me for the times I have built on foundations other than Christ — chasing approval, comfort, or success instead of Your glory. Teach me to live with eternity in view, investing in what will survive the fire of Your refining love. In Jesus name, Amen.
