Acts — Chapter 28 (BSB)
Chapter Overview
Acts 28 brings Luke's account of the early church to its dramatic and Spirit-filled conclusion, beginning with Paul's shipwreck survival on the island of Malta (v. 1). From the moment Paul arrives, God's power is on display — a viper's bite leaves him unharmed (v. 3-6), and he heals the father of Publius along with many others on the island (v. 8-9). After three months, Paul finally makes his way to Rome, where fellow believers travel miles to meet him, filling him with courage (v. 15). In Rome, Paul lives under house arrest but with remarkable freedom — for two full years he welcomes all who come to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about Jesus openly and unhindered (v. 30-31). The chapter closes on that word 'unhindered,' a fitting capstone for the entire book of Acts, reminding every believer that no chain, no storm, and no opposition can ultimately stop the advancing gospel of Jesus Christ.

Paul's calm response to the viper's bite is a picture of gospel-rooted fearlessness — he simply shook it off and kept moving. God had promised Paul he would reach Rome, and no serpent could alter that plan. When unexpected dangers strike your life, you can trust that God's purposes for you will not be derailed by them.

"The father of Publius was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after praying and placing his hands on him, he healed the man."
Even as a prisoner on a foreign island, Paul's first instinct was to pray for and serve others. He did not wait for ideal circumstances before ministering — he simply saw a need and brought Jesus to it. God invites you to do the same, letting your faith be active and compassionate wherever He places you.

"The brothers there had heard about us and traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and gave thanks to God."
Believers traveling miles just to walk alongside Paul in his hardship is one of the most tender moments in all of Acts. Their presence did not fix his circumstances, but it lifted his spirit and caused him to thank God. This verse reminds you of the sacred gift of Christian community and the courage that comes simply from knowing you are not alone.

"So they set a day to meet with Paul, and many people came to the place he was staying. He expounded to them from morning to evening, testifying about the kingdom of God and persuading them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets."
Under house arrest, Paul turned his quarters into a place of earnest, all-day proclamation — testifying from Scripture about the kingdom of God and the person of Jesus. His limitations became a platform. Whatever season of life you find yourself in, God can use your current circumstances as a place of faithful witness and spiritual influence.

"Boldly and freely he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ."
The final word of the book of Acts in the Greek is 'unhindered' — and it is a declaration that the gospel cannot ultimately be stopped. Though Paul wore chains, the Word of God did not. Let this closing verse be an anchor for your own faith, reminding you that when you walk in step with God, His purposes through your life will go forward, no matter what opposes them.

This week, look for one person in a difficult situation — whether through illness, discouragement, or hardship — and bring the presence of Jesus to them through prayer, a kind word, or a simple act of care, the way Paul did for Publius's father.
Write the word 'unhindered' somewhere you will see it daily this week — on a notecard, your phone, or a mirror — and let it be a reminder that no circumstance in your life is powerful enough to stop what God has purposed for you.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the reminder that Your gospel cannot be chained, stopped, or hindered — not by storms, not by opposition, and not by anything I am facing today. Help me to be like Paul, faithful and bold in whatever circumstances You have placed me in, trusting that You are always at work. Give me the courage to bring Your presence to the people around me, and let my life — however small or limited it may feel — be used for the advance of Your kingdom. In Jesus name, Amen.
