Ephesians — Chapter 4 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Ephesians 4 marks a turning point in Paul's letter, shifting from deep theological foundations to practical Christian living. Beginning in verse 1, Paul urges believers to 'walk in a manner worthy of the calling' they have received — a call rooted in the grace-filled identity established in chapters 1–3. In verses 4–6, Paul anchors unity in the reality of one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God — reminding the individual believer that their personal faith is inseparable from the larger family of God. Starting in verse 11, Paul describes how Christ gives gifts to His church — apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers — for the purpose of equipping every believer to do the work of ministry and grow toward maturity (as seen in v. 12–14). The chapter then moves into the ethics of the new life in Christ, contrasting the 'old self' with the 'new self' created in true righteousness and holiness (v. 22–24). Paul closes with specific relational commands in verses 25–32, calling believers to put away falsehood, anger, theft, and corrupt talk, and to be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving — because God in Christ has forgiven them.

Paul writes this from prison, yet his focus is entirely on how you live — not how you feel about your circumstances. The word 'therefore' connects everything Paul taught about grace and identity in chapters 1–3 to this moment of practical living. Your calling is not something you earn; it is something God has already given you, and now He invites you to walk in step with it.
Ephesians 4:7 (ESV)
"But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift."
This verse is a personal promise — not just a general statement about the church. Christ Himself has given you grace in a specific measure, tailored for who He made you to be. You are not overlooked or generic in God's economy; you have been individually gifted to play a real and meaningful part in His kingdom.
Ephesians 4:15 (ESV)
"Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,"
Spiritual maturity is not about knowing more — it is about becoming more like Christ, which involves both truth and love held together. This verse challenges you to resist the temptation to choose one over the other: truth without love can wound, and love without truth can mislead. Growing up in Christ means learning to hold both with grace, the way He does.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (ESV)
"to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."
Paul uses the image of changing clothes — putting off the old and putting on the new — to describe a daily, intentional act of the will empowered by the Spirit. The 'new self' is not something you build from scratch; it has already been created in you through Christ, after the very likeness of God. Every morning is an opportunity to consciously step into who God has already declared you to be.
Ephesians 4:32 (ESV)
"Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you."
The final standard Paul sets for how you treat others is not fairness or reciprocity — it is the cross. The forgiveness you extend flows from the forgiveness you have already received, and that changes everything about your motivation. When kindness and forgiveness feel hard, returning to what Christ did for you is not just encouragement — it is the source of power to do it again.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for calling me by name and giving me a place in Your family and Your purposes. Teach me what it means to walk worthy of that calling today — not in my own strength, but by the grace You have already measured out for me. Where I have been clinging to my old self, help me to let it go and step fully into the new self You have created in me through Christ. Make me kind, tenderhearted, and quick to forgive, because You have been all of those things to me. In Jesus name, Amen.
