Standing Firm: Family, Work, and the Armor of God
Ephesians — Chapter 6 (BSB)
📖
Ephesians 6 brings Paul's letter to a powerful close by addressing three areas of Christian life: family relationships, the work of servants and masters, and the spiritual battle every believer faces. Beginning in verse 1, Paul calls children to obey their parents and fathers to raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, grounding family life in God's design. In verses 5-9, he addresses the relationship between bondservants and masters, reminding both that they ultimately serve Christ and will give account to Him. The chapter then shifts dramatically in verse 10, where Paul calls every believer to 'be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power,' revealing that the true struggle of the Christian life is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil (v. 12). Paul's answer to this warfare is the full armor of God — truth, righteousness, the gospel, faith, salvation, and the Word of God — each piece a gift from God to help you stand firm in the evil day (v. 13). The chapter closes with Paul's personal request for prayer in verses 19-20, reminding the reader that even the greatest apostles relied on the intercession of fellow believers and that prayer is itself a weapon of spiritual warfare.
✦
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”
Paul grounds obedience to parents not in culture or tradition but in the Lord Himself, making it an act of faith and worship. Whether you are still in your family home or grown, this verse invites you to reflect on how honoring those in authority over you reflects your trust in God's order. Obedience in the home is often where your walk with Christ is tested most personally and practically.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”
This is one of the most important commands in the entire letter — and notice it is not a call to summon your own strength but to draw from the Lord's. Paul uses the word 'finally' to mark a shift into the ultimate reality of the Christian life: you are in a spiritual battle that requires supernatural power. The good news is that the strength you need is already available to you in Christ.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
This verse fundamentally changes how you should interpret conflict, struggle, and opposition in your life. The people who frustrate or oppose you are not your true enemy — there are spiritual forces working behind the scenes that only prayer and God's armor can address. Recognizing this shifts your response from anger or despair toward intercession and dependence on God.
“And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
The helmet of salvation guards your mind with the settled assurance that you belong to God, protecting you from the enemy's accusations and doubts. The sword of the Spirit — the Word of God — is the only offensive weapon in the armor, which means Scripture is your primary tool for pushing back against darkness. This is a personal call for you to know and use your Bible not just as a devotional comfort but as a living, active weapon in your daily battles.
“Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.”
After laying out every piece of the armor, Paul lands on prayer as the atmosphere in which all of it functions — it is not just one piece but the very breath of the armored life. The call to pray 'at all times' means prayer is meant to be woven into every moment of your day, not confined to a morning routine. Staying alert and persevering in prayer is how you remain actively engaged in the spiritual battle rather than passively waiting for it to pass.
🧵
  • God's order in family and work relationships
  • The reality of spiritual warfare
  • The armor of God as God's provision for the believer
❓
  • When you face conflict or difficulty this week, how might it change things to pause and ask whether there is a spiritual battle behind what you are experiencing?
  • Which piece of the armor of God do you feel like you most need to put on right now, and why does that one feel most relevant to your life today?
🌱
→Choose one piece of the armor of God from verses 14-17 and spend time this week meditating on what it means practically — ask God to show you how to wear it in a specific situation you are currently facing.
→Set aside five minutes each day this week to pray specifically and intentionally, even briefly, before you step into your work, your home, or any situation where you feel pressure — treat prayer as your first response rather than your last resort.
🙏
Father, thank You for not leaving me to face the battles of life in my own strength. Open my eyes to see the spiritual realities behind the struggles I face, and help me to stand firm in the full armor You have provided. Teach me to pick up the sword of Your Word with confidence and to pray without ceasing, trusting that You are with me in every moment of the fight. In Jesus name, Amen.
