God's Final Word Over His Enemies and His People
Ezekiel — Chapter 39 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Ezekiel 39 concludes the Gog and Magog oracle begun in chapter 38, bringing God's decisive judgment against the invading forces to its ultimate resolution. Beginning in verse 1, God speaks directly against Gog, promising to strike his bow from his left hand and his arrows from his right, leaving his army destroyed on the mountains of Israel. The scale of the aftermath is staggering — verses 9 through 16 describe Israel spending seven years burning the weapons of war and seven months burying the dead, underscoring just how complete God's victory will be. Verse 7 stands at the heart of the chapter's purpose: God declares He will make His holy name known in the midst of His people Israel, and He will not let it be profaned anymore. The chapter closes on a profoundly personal and hopeful note in verses 25 through 29, where God promises to restore the fortunes of Jacob, pour out His Spirit on the house of Israel, and hide His face from them no more. Ezekiel 39:21 (ESV)
"And I will set my glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid on them."
God's acts of judgment are not hidden or private — they are displayed before the watching world so that His glory becomes undeniable. This should give you courage when you feel like goodness and faithfulness seem to go unnoticed, because God has a way of making His truth visible on the world's stage. Trust that His glory will ultimately be made plain, even in the situations of your own life.
Ezekiel 39:25-26 (ESV)
"Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my holy name. They shall forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when they dwell securely in their land with none to make them afraid."
After all the devastation of judgment, God's heart turns toward restoration, mercy, and the removal of shame from His people. This is a beautiful picture of what God does for every believer — He does not leave you in your failure but moves toward you with jealous, restoring love. The security described here, dwelling without fear, is a gift He offers you today through your relationship with Him.
Ezekiel 39:29 (ESV)
"And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the Lord GOD."
This closing promise is one of the most tender and powerful in all of Ezekiel — God declares that the day is coming when He will never again turn His face away from His people, and He seals it with the gift of His Spirit. As a New Testament believer, you live on the fulfilled side of this promise, because through Christ the Spirit has been poured out on you. Let this verse fill you with gratitude that you have unhindered access to the face of God.

Father, reading Ezekiel 39 reminds me that You are not a passive observer of history or of my life — You are the God who acts, who judges, who restores, and who is zealous for Your own name and for Your people. I confess that I sometimes live as though the enemy has more power than he does, and I ask You to renew my confidence in Your sovereignty today. Thank You that the same God who promised to pour out His Spirit and never hide His face has fulfilled that promise in my life through Jesus Christ.
