A Land Divided by Grace
Ezekiel — Chapter 48 (BSB)
📖
Ezekiel 48 brings the great vision of restoration to its close, detailing the allotment of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel, beginning in verses 1-7 with seven tribes receiving portions north of the sacred district, and continuing in verses 23-29 with five tribes receiving portions to the south. At the center of the entire arrangement, as described in verses 8-22, lies the sacred portion set apart for the LORD Himself — a strip of land containing the sanctuary, the priests, the Levites, and the prince, all ordered around God's holy dwelling place. The vision reaches its breathtaking climax in verses 30-35, where the gates of the new city are named after the twelve tribes, signifying that all of God's people have a permanent place in His presence. The chapter — and the entire book — ends in verse 35 with the new name given to the city: 'The LORD is There,' Yahweh Shammah, the ultimate promise that God will dwell with His people forever. For the individual believer today, this chapter is a reminder that God's redemptive plan is ordered, purposeful, and inclusive — no one is forgotten, every tribe has a gate, and the whole design centers on God's presence among His people.
✦
“Bordering the territory of Judah, from east to west, will be the portion you are to set apart. It will be 25,000 cubits wide, and the length of a tribal portion from east to west. In the center will be the sanctuary.”
The sanctuary sits at the very center of the land — not at the edge or the periphery, but in the middle of everything. This is a powerful picture of what your life can look like when you place God's presence at the absolute center of your days. When the Lord is truly in the middle, everything else finds its proper place around Him.
“This will be the holy portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side, and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center will be the sanctuary of the LORD.”
God lovingly specifies the portion set apart for those who minister in His presence — every measurement is deliberate and precise. This speaks to how seriously God takes the idea of drawing near to Him and living set apart for His purposes. If you have been called to serve the Lord in any capacity, know that He sees your devotion and has already made room for you close to His heart.
“This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Lord GOD.”
The phrase 'declares the Lord GOD' closes the allotment with divine authority — this is not a human plan but God's own word sealed with His name. There is deep comfort in knowing that your inheritance in God is not earned by your effort but declared by His sovereign will. What He has prepared for you, no one can take away.
“the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. On the north side there will be three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi.”
Every tribe — including those who had been faithless and wayward throughout Israel's history — has a gate named for them in the holy city. This is grace on display: God does not erase the names of the imperfect but inscribes them permanently into the architecture of His eternal dwelling. If you have wondered whether your failures disqualify you from belonging to God's people, the gates say otherwise.
“The perimeter of the city will be 18,000 cubits, and from that day on the name of the city will be: THE LORD IS THERE.””
Yahweh Shammah — 'The LORD is There' — is the final word of a book that began with God's glory departing from a corrupt temple. The whole arc of Ezekiel ends not with judgment but with presence restored. For you today, this is the promise that anchors every hope: no matter where you are in your journey, God's ultimate desire is simply to be with you.
🧵
  • God's presence at the center of all things
  • Divine order, purpose, and intentionality
  • Belonging and inclusion in God's eternal plan
❓
  • When you look honestly at the layout of your daily life, what sits at the center — and what would it look like for God's presence to truly be in the middle of it?
  • The city's final name is 'The LORD Is There' — where in your life do you most need to be reminded that He is present with you right now?
🌱
→This week, choose one specific part of your daily routine — morning, mealtime, or evening — and intentionally pause to acknowledge God's presence in that moment, making Him the center of that time rather than an afterthought.
→Write the phrase 'The LORD Is There' somewhere you will see it every day this week — on a mirror, a phone screen, or a notecard — as a personal reminder that God has not left you and His presence is your greatest inheritance.
🙏
Father, thank You that the whole story of Ezekiel ends not with Your absence but with Your presence — that You desire to dwell with Your people and to be at the very center of our lives. Forgive me for the times I have pushed You to the edges and filled the center with lesser things. Help me to live this week with the deep confidence that You are there — in every room, every worry, every quiet moment. In Jesus' name, Amen.
