Isaiah — Chapter 24 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Isaiah 24 opens what scholars often call the 'Isaiah Apocalypse' (chapters 24–27), a sweeping vision of worldwide judgment and ultimate divine triumph. Beginning in verse 1, the prophet declares that God will empty and devastate the earth, making no distinction between priest and people, master and servant, buyer and seller — judgment falls on all alike (vv. 1–3). The land mourns and withers because its people have broken the everlasting covenant (vv. 4–6), a likely reference to the moral and spiritual laws written into creation itself. The joyful sounds of feasting and music fall silent (vv. 7–13), replaced by the haunting cry of the remnant who glorify God from the ends of the earth, though Isaiah himself weeps over the treachery still to come (vv. 14–16). The chapter closes with a vision of cosmic shaking — the very foundations of the earth tremble — but ends on a note of certain hope as the Lord of hosts is seen reigning gloriously on Mount Zion (vv. 21–23). "They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; over the majesty of the LORD they shout from the west. Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD, the God of Israel."
Even in the midst of a chapter heavy with judgment, a remnant bursts into worship — and their praise rises from every direction on earth. This is a picture of the unstoppable nature of God's glory; no amount of darkness can silence those whose hearts are truly His. You are invited to be one of those voices, choosing to lift praise to God even in seasons that feel dark or uncertain.
Isaiah 24:20 (ESV)
"The earth staggers like a drunken man; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again."
This vivid image of a swaying, collapsing world is a powerful picture of what happens when creation is burdened by the weight of sin. It speaks to why the world often feels so unstable and uncertain — nothing built apart from God can hold its footing. For you, this is both a warning and a comfort: do not build your life on what is staggering, but on the One who cannot be shaken.
Isaiah 24:23 (ESV)
"Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for the LORD of hosts reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will be before his elders."
The chapter that began with devastation ends with a breathtaking declaration: the Lord reigns. Even the greatest lights in the sky dim before His glory. For you, this is the ultimate hope — history is not spiraling out of control but moving toward the moment when every knee bows and the Lord is seen as King over all creation.

This week, identify one thing you have been leaning on for security outside of God — a relationship, a financial plan, a routine — and intentionally bring it before Him in prayer, asking Him to be your foundation in that area.
Take five minutes each morning this week to read verse 23 aloud as a declaration of faith, reminding yourself before the day begins that the Lord of hosts reigns — over your circumstances, your fears, and your future.

Father, Your Word in Isaiah 24 reminds me that You are sovereign over all of history, and that nothing in this world is as stable or lasting as Your throne. Forgive me for the ways I have placed my confidence in things that are temporary and have broken Your covenant through my own sin and self-reliance. I choose today to lift my voice with the remnant who praise You from the ends of the earth, declaring that You alone are worthy of all glory. Thank You that the shaking of this world is not the end of the story — the end is You, reigning in glory. In Jesus name, Amen.
