Sent Out: The Cost and Courage of Following Jesus
Matthew — Chapter 10 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Matthew 10 records Jesus commissioning His twelve disciples and sending them out for the first time as His ambassadors, beginning with the calling of each apostle by name in verses 2-4. He gives them authority over unclean spirits and disease (v. 1) and provides detailed instructions for their mission — where to go, what to bring, how to respond to rejection, and how to endure hostility (v. 5-15). Starting in verse 16, Jesus shifts into a longer, sobering warning that this mission will invite real opposition, even from family members, as the world's resistance to Him will extend to those who represent Him. Yet running through every warning is a thread of extraordinary comfort — God numbers the very hairs on your head and notices every sparrow that falls (v. 29-30), so fear has no ultimate power over the one who belongs to Him. The chapter closes in verses 40-42 with a remarkable promise: whoever receives a disciple receives Jesus Himself, and even a cup of cold water given in His name will not go unrewarded. For the individual believer today, this chapter is a call to courageous, wholehearted discipleship — trusting that the God who sends you also goes with you.

Matthew 10:8 (ESV)
"Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay."
Everything you have received from God — grace, forgiveness, new life, the Holy Spirit — came to you as a pure gift you could never earn. This verse calls you to let that same spirit of generosity flow outward into every act of service and ministry you offer to others. The gospel you carry was free to you; it should be freely given.
Matthew 10:16 (ESV)
"Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves."
Jesus never promised that living for Him would be comfortable or without danger — He promised that He would be the One doing the sending. This verse gives you both a realistic picture of the world's hostility and a practical strategy: discernment paired with purity, shrewdness paired with integrity. You are not naive, but you are also not cynical — you walk wisely because you belong to someone wiser still.
Matthew 10:28 (ESV)
"And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
Jesus reorients your fears here, pointing you to what is truly permanent versus what is temporary. Human opposition, rejection, and even physical harm cannot touch the eternal life God has placed within you. When you keep this eternal perspective, the approval or disapproval of other people loses the suffocating grip it so easily gains over your daily choices.
Matthew 10:29-31 (ESV)
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows."
Right in the middle of His most challenging call to costly discipleship, Jesus anchors you in the tenderness of the Father's care. The God who governs the universe notices every sparrow — and He knows you with an intimacy that counts the hairs on your head. Whatever risk or vulnerability following Jesus asks of you this week, you carry it before a Father who sees every detail of your life.
Matthew 10:39 (ESV)
"Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."
This is one of Jesus' most paradoxical and life-changing invitations in all of scripture. The life you cling to — built around your comfort, your plans, your self-protection — is actually the life that slips away. But the moment you open your hands and give yourself fully to Jesus, you discover a life that cannot be taken from you. This verse asks you to examine what you are holding onto most tightly.

Identify one person in your life who needs to hear the love of Jesus this week, and ask God for a natural, genuine opportunity to speak or show that love to them — trusting that He goes before you.
Each morning this week, begin your day by reading Matthew 10:29-31 aloud and reminding yourself that you are deeply known and deeply valued by the Father before you face anything the day brings.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the reminder in Matthew 10 that You do not send me anywhere You have not already gone ahead of me. Forgive me for the times I have let fear of people or fear of rejection keep me silent when You were inviting me to speak. Teach me what it means to lose my life for Your sake, and fill me with the courage that only comes from truly believing I am seen, known, and held by You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
