The Crucifixion of the King
Matthew — Chapter 27 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Matthew 27 records the final hours of Jesus' earthly life, from His betrayal handed over to Pilate in verses 1-2 to His burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea in verses 57-61. The chapter opens with the tragic end of Judas, who returned the thirty pieces of silver and hanged himself in remorse (verses 3-10), before moving into Pilate's famous trial where he found no guilt in Jesus yet handed Him over to be crucified under public pressure (verses 11-26). The soldiers mock Jesus as King of the Jews, crown Him with thorns, and lead Him to Golgotha, where He is crucified between two criminals as the crowd and religious leaders taunt Him (verses 27-44). At the sixth hour, darkness covered the land, and Jesus cried out 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' before giving up His spirit, at which moment the temple veil was torn in two from top to bottom (verses 45-54). For the individual believer today, this chapter is not merely history — it is the moment everything changed, the price paid for your sin and mine, the love of God made visible in the most costly way imaginable.
Key Verses
Matthew 27:4 (ESV)
"saying, 'I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.' They said, 'What is that to us? See to it yourself.'"
Judas recognized that Jesus was innocent, yet his remorse led to despair rather than repentance. This verse is a sobering reminder that acknowledging sin is not the same as turning to God in faith — true repentance runs toward Jesus, not away from Him. When you feel the weight of your own failures, let it drive you to the cross, not into isolation.
Matthew 27:22 (ESV)
"Pilate said to them, 'Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all said, 'Let him be crucified.'"
Pilate's question is the question every person must ultimately answer for themselves — what will you do with Jesus? Pilate tried to avoid choosing, yet in his silence he condemned an innocent man. This verse challenges you to examine whether there are areas of your life where you are still avoiding a full, wholehearted surrender to Jesus as Lord.
Matthew 27:46 (ESV)
"And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, 'Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?' that is, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'"
In this agonizing cry, Jesus bore the full weight of God's wrath against sin so that you would never have to be forsaken by the Father. He entered the darkness of separation so you could walk in the light of adoption. When you feel alone or abandoned, remember that Jesus went to that place first — and He went there for you.
Matthew 27:51 (ESV)
"And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split."
The tearing of the temple veil from top to bottom — God's action, not man's — announced that direct access to God was now open to all who come through Christ. The barrier between a holy God and sinful humanity was removed the moment Jesus breathed His last. You no longer need a priest, a ritual, or a system to draw near to God — the way is open, and it is open for you.
Matthew 27:54 (ESV)
"When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'"
A Roman soldier — an outsider to the faith of Israel — was the first to confess Jesus as the Son of God at the cross. This declaration reminds you that the cross has the power to break through even the hardest or most unlikely heart, including your own and those of people you love. The evidence of who Jesus is was unmistakable then, and it remains unmistakable today.

Set aside five minutes this week to sit quietly with Matthew 27:46 and thank Jesus specifically for the moments in your own life when He bore the weight so you didn't have to — let gratitude become something concrete and personal.
Because the veil has been torn and the way to God is open, choose one day this week to begin your morning by coming directly to God in prayer before you reach for your phone or start your routine — practicing the open access Jesus purchased for you.
Closing Prayer
Father, I come to the foot of the cross in awe and gratitude, knowing that everything Jesus suffered in Matthew 27 He suffered for me. Thank You for the torn veil, for the open door, for the love that would not stop short of death on my behalf. Forgive me for the times I have treated His sacrifice lightly or hesitated to surrender fully to You, and renew in me a fresh wonder at what it cost You to bring me close. In Jesus name, Amen.
