Genesis 21:1-2 (BSB)
"Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised. So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised."
Two phrases stand out here: 'as he had said' and 'as he had promised.' God does not speak idle words — what He declares, He delivers. For you personally, this verse is a reminder that every promise God has spoken over your life will come to pass in His perfect time, not yours.
Genesis 21:17-19 (BSB)
"Then God heard the voice of the boy, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong, Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies. Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.” Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink."
In her darkest moment of despair, God saw Hagar and heard the cry of her child. He did not abandon those outside the covenant household — He provided exactly what was needed in exactly the right moment. This passage assures you that God sees you in your wilderness seasons, hears your cries even when you feel invisible, and has provision waiting that you may not yet be able to see.
Genesis 21:33 (BSB)
"And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God."
Abraham worshiped God as 'El Olam' — the Everlasting God — a name that speaks to God's unchanging, eternal nature. Planting a tree was an act of long-term faith, declaring that the God who had been faithful would continue to be faithful for generations to come. This invites you to cultivate a posture of worship and long-term trust, remembering that the God you serve today is the same God who will carry you through every season of life.

- Is there a promise from God — from Scripture or through prayer — that you have been waiting on for a long time? How does the birth of Isaac encourage you to keep trusting, even when the waiting feels impossible?
- Hagar felt utterly abandoned and hopeless in the wilderness, yet God was fully aware of her and her son's situation. In what area of your life do you most need to believe that God sees you and hears your cries right now?
- God opened Hagar's eyes to see a well that was already there. Are there resources, people, or answers in your current situation that God may be trying to open your eyes to if you look with faith?
- Abraham planted a tree — an act of worship and long-term trust in God's faithfulness. What practical act of faith or worship could you plant in your life right now as a declaration that you trust God with your future?
- Sarah laughed with joy at the fulfillment of God's promise, saying 'God has made laughter for me' (v. 6). When did you last experience genuine joy rooted in God's faithfulness? What would it look like to invite more of that joy into your daily walk with Him?
Personal Application
Write down one specific promise from Scripture that you are trusting God to fulfill in your life. Place it somewhere visible this week — on your mirror, your phone wallpaper, or your journal — and each morning, read it aloud as an act of faith, declaring that God's Word does not return void.
Set aside ten minutes this week to sit quietly before God and invite Him to open your eyes to His provision in your current circumstances. Ask Him specifically: 'Lord, what have You already placed near me that I am not yet seeing?' Journal what comes to mind and take one step of faith based on what He shows you.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that You are the Everlasting God — the same yesterday, today, and forever — and that every word You have spoken is true and will come to pass. Forgive me for the times I have doubted Your promises or grown impatient with Your timing, and help me to trust You the way Abraham and Sarah ultimately did. Open my eyes to see Your provision in my wilderness moments, and remind me that even when I feel unseen, You hear my cries and You are already at work on my behalf. Teach me to worship You not only in the moments of fulfillment, but in the long seasons of waiting, knowing that You are faithful to complete what You have begun. In Jesus name, Amen.
