Numbers — Chapter 23 (BSB)
Chapter Overview
Numbers 23 records the first two of Balaam's four oracles, spoken over Israel at the request of the Moabite king Balak. Beginning in verse 1, Balak brings Balaam to the high places of Baal, hoping the pagan prophet will curse the nation of Israel and weaken them before battle. Instead, God intervenes and places His own words in Balaam's mouth (v. 5), and what Balak intended as a curse becomes a powerful blessing. In the first oracle (vv. 7-10), Balaam marvels at Israel's distinct and set-apart status among the nations, declaring he cannot curse what God has not cursed. The second oracle (vv. 18-24) is even more striking, boldly proclaiming that God is not a man that He should lie (v. 19), and that no word spoken against His people can stand when He has blessed them. For the individual believer today, this chapter is a profound reminder that God's promises over your life are not vulnerable to the schemes of your enemies — His word stands firm, and no spiritual opposition can reverse what He has declared.

"Then the LORD put a message in Balaam’s mouth, saying, “Return to Balak and give him this message.”"
God is so sovereign over His purposes that He can take a compromised vessel and still accomplish His perfect word through him. This verse reminds you that God's message will go forth — not because of the messenger's worthiness, but because of His own authority. Even when people intend harm against you, God controls the narrative.

"How can I curse what God has not cursed? How can I denounce what the LORD has not denounced?"
Balaam's rhetorical question reveals a stunning truth: no curse, no accusation, and no spiritual attack can land on the one whom God has blessed. This should fill you with deep security — not arrogance, but rest — knowing that your standing before God is determined by Him alone. What He has declared over you cannot be reversed by any human or spiritual opposition.

"But Balaam replied, “Should I not speak exactly what the LORD puts in my mouth?”"
When Balak pressures Balaam to change his words, Balaam's response points to something every believer needs: the courage to say only what God has said, even under pressure. This is an invitation for you to ask whether you are speaking God's truth over your own life and circumstances, or allowing outside pressure to reshape your confession. God's word in your mouth is more powerful than any opinion or fear around you.

"God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?"
This verse stands as one of the great anchors of faith in all of Scripture. When doubt or delay makes God's promises feel uncertain, you can return here and remember that His word is not subject to human frailty — He does not forget, exaggerate, or go back on what He has spoken. Whatever He has promised you in His Word, He will fulfill.
Numbers 23:23 (BSB)
"For there is no spell against Jacob and no divination against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘What great things God has done!’"
This declaration closes the second oracle with a triumphant statement about spiritual protection: no dark power can successfully operate against a people under God's covering. For you as a believer, this is a reminder that spiritual warfare is real, but it is not equal — God's protection over His own is absolute. The right response is worship, marveling at what God has done rather than trembling at what the enemy attempts.
