Chapter Overview
In Numbers 24, Balaam delivers his third and fourth oracles over Israel, and this time something shifts — beginning in verse 1, he stops seeking omens and instead turns his face directly toward the wilderness where Israel is camped, and the Spirit of God comes upon him. His third oracle (vv. 3-9) paints a breathtaking picture of Israel's beauty and blessing, comparing her encampments to gardens by a river and tall cedar trees. When King Balak erupts in fury at being blessed instead of cursed (v. 10), Balaam stands firm and declares in verse 13 that he cannot go beyond the word of the LORD even for a house full of silver and gold. The fourth and final oracle (vv. 15-19) pierces through time with a stunning messianic prophecy — 'a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel' — pointing beyond the immediate horizon to the coming King, Jesus Christ. Centuries before Bethlehem, God was already announcing the coming King through the mouth of a pagan prophet — a testament to how thoroughly God's redemptive plan runs through all of history.
