Numbers 36 brings the book of Numbers to a close by resolving a practical concern raised by the leaders of the tribe of Manasseh regarding the daughters of Zelophehad (v. 1-2). In the previous chapter, these women had been granted the right to inherit their father's land — a remarkable provision for women in the ancient world — but the tribal leaders feared that if these daughters married men from other tribes, the land would transfer away from Manasseh permanently (v. 3-4). God responds through Moses with a wise and fair decree: daughters who inherit land must marry within their own tribe so that the inheritance of each tribe remains intact across generations (v. 6-9). The daughters of Zelophehad — Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah — faithfully obey this command and marry within the clan of their father (v. 10-12). "So the daughters of Zelophehad did as the LORD had commanded Moses."
In just one simple sentence, five women demonstrate extraordinary obedience. They had already shown courage in coming forward to claim their inheritance, and now they show faithfulness by submitting to God's direction even when it shaped one of the most personal decisions of their lives. "These are the commandments and ordinances that the LORD gave the Israelites through Moses on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho."
