Exodus — Chapter 2 (BSB)
Chapter Overview
Exodus 2 opens with the birth of Moses, a child born under a death sentence issued by Pharaoh against all Hebrew baby boys (v. 1-2). His mother, seeing that he was a fine child, hides him for three months in an act of extraordinary faith and love, and when she can no longer conceal him, she places him in a papyrus basket among the reeds of the Nile (v. 3), trusting God with what she cannot control. Remarkably, Pharaoh's own daughter discovers the infant, has compassion on him, and unknowingly hires his own mother to nurse him — a stunning reversal engineered quietly by God's providence (v. 5-9). Moses grows up in Pharaoh's house but never loses sight of who his people are, and in a moment of anger he kills an Egyptian taskmaster who was beating a Hebrew, only to find his act known and himself forced to flee to Midian (v. 11-15). The chapter closes on two pivotal notes: Moses finds a wife and builds a new life in Midian (v. 21), but more importantly, God hears the groaning of His people in Egypt and remembers His covenant (v. 24-25) — a reminder to every believer that God sees hidden suffering and is always at work even in seasons of silence.

"and she conceived and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months."
A mother's love moved her to protect what God had given her, even at great personal risk. This verse reminds you that acting in faith often means doing the next courageous thing right in front of you, trusting God with the outcome. What you guard in obedience, God can use for purposes far beyond what you can see.

"And his sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him."
Miriam's quiet, watchful faithfulness in the background is easy to overlook, yet it was essential to Moses' survival and the unfolding of God's plan. God uses ordinary, unseen acts of loyalty and attentiveness just as powerfully as the dramatic moments of faith. You don't have to be in the spotlight to be exactly where God needs you.
Exodus 2:10 (BSB)
"When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”"
The name Moses — drawn out of the water — became a living testimony to God's rescue woven into his very identity. Every detail of his early life, from the river to the palace, was shaping him for a mission he didn't yet know. In the same way, God is at work in the details of your story, even the parts that seem like detours or accidents.
Exodus 2:15 (BSB)
"When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, where he sat down beside a well."
Moses fled as a fugitive, and his great ambitions seemed to collapse into a quiet life by a well in a foreign land. What looks like a dead end in your life can be the very place God chooses to prepare you — Midian was not the end of Moses' story, but a necessary chapter in it. When God allows a season of stillness or retreat, He has not abandoned your purpose.
Exodus 2:24-25 (BSB)
"So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God saw the Israelites and took notice."
These two verses are among the most comforting in all of Scripture — God hears, God remembers, God sees, and God knows. Israel had been crying out in slavery for generations, and it may have felt like heaven was silent, yet nothing had been forgotten. Whatever suffering or waiting you carry right now, these words are a promise: God has not overlooked you, and His timing is never too late.

Look for one small, faithful act you can do quietly this week — something no one else may notice — and offer it to God as an act of worship, trusting that He uses the hidden and the ordinary for His purposes.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that You are not a distant God — You see me, You hear me, and You remember Your promises to me even when I can't feel Your presence. Help me to trust You in the waiting seasons, the wilderness stretches, and the moments when my path makes no sense to me. Remind me that You are preparing me, just as You prepared Moses, for purposes that are already in Your hands. In Jesus name, Amen.
