Exodus — Chapter 40 (BSB)

Exodus 40 brings the entire book to its magnificent conclusion as Moses obediently erects the tabernacle on the first day of the first month of the second year (v. 17), following God's detailed instructions to the letter. Beginning in verse 1, God speaks directly to Moses and lays out the precise order in which each piece of furniture and each sacred vessel is to be set in place and anointed, consecrating the tabernacle as holy. Moses carries out every command without deviation — the affirmation that he did everything just as the LORD had commanded him echoes again and again throughout the chapter (vv. 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 32), emphasizing total, joyful obedience as the posture of worship. The climactic moment arrives in verses 34–35 when the cloud of God's glory descends and fills the tabernacle so completely that even Moses cannot enter — a breathtaking sign that the living God has truly come to dwell among His people. Exodus 40:29 (BSB)
"He placed the altar of burnt offering near the entrance to the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the grain offering, just as the LORD had commanded him."
The altar stood at the very entrance — the first thing encountered before drawing near to God — because sacrifice and atonement make access to God possible. For you as a New Testament believer, this points powerfully to Jesus, whose sacrifice at the cross is the one entrance into the presence of the Father. Every time you come to God in prayer, you come through the altar Christ already fulfilled on your behalf.
Exodus 40:34 (BSB)
"Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle."
This is the moment the whole book of Exodus has been building toward — God Himself taking up residence among His people. The same Spirit who filled that tabernacle desires to fill you (1 Corinthians 6:19), and this verse should stir in you a holy longing to make room for His glory in your everyday life. Ask yourself whether the 'tabernacle' of your heart is prepared and set in order to receive Him.
Exodus 40:38 (BSB)
"For the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel through all their journeys."
God's presence was not a one-time event — it was a continuous, visible reality that accompanied Israel every single day and every single night of their journey. This is the God you serve: One who does not show up for a season and then leave, but who commits to guiding you through every leg of the road ahead. Let this verse anchor your confidence that you are never walking through life's wilderness alone.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the reminder in Exodus 40 that You are a God who desires to dwell with Your people — not just among them from a distance, but so near that Your glory fills every corner. I want my heart to be a place where You are welcome, set in order by obedience and opened wide by trust in what Jesus has done for me. Forgive me for the times I have made room for everything except Your presence, and teach me to walk each day guided by Your cloud, just as You led Israel through every step of their journey.
