Joshua 11 records the northern coalition campaign, in which a vast alliance of Canaanite kings — led by Jabin of Hazor — massed against Israel with horses, chariots, and an army described as 'like the sand that is on the seashore in multitude' (v. 4). Before the battle even begins, God speaks directly to Joshua in verse 6 with a stunning promise: 'Do not be afraid of them, for by this time tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain before Israel.' This verse is one of the most significant in the entire book — Joshua's success is directly tied to his complete obedience to God's word, leaving 'nothing undone.' There is no partial obedience celebrated here, only wholehearted follow-through. "For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts to engage Israel in battle, so that they would be set apart for destruction and would receive no mercy, being annihilated as the LORD had commanded Moses."

This verse confronts us with the sobering sovereignty of God — even the enemies' resistance served His purposes and fulfilled His word spoken long before in Deuteronomy. It can be difficult to read, but for the believer it carries deep comfort: nothing in your life, not even the hostility or opposition you face, falls outside of God's sovereign plan. "So Joshua took the entire land, in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to the allotments to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war."

The chapter closes with the land at rest — a beautiful picture of the peace that follows faithful obedience over a long, sustained season of trust in God. The phrase 'in keeping with all that the LORD had spoken to Moses' ties the conclusion back to God's promise, reminding you that God always finishes what He starts. 🙏 Closing Prayer

Father, thank You that You are a God who goes before me into every battle and that no coalition of enemies, fears, or circumstances is too great for Your hand. Like Joshua, I want to walk in complete obedience to Your word and leave nothing undone that You have called me to. Where I have been afraid or have only obeyed halfway, forgive me and give me the courage to trust You fully today.
