Joshua 5 marks a pivotal moment of spiritual preparation before Israel enters the battles of Canaan. In verses 2-9, God commands a second circumcision of the people at Gibeath-haaraloth, renewing the covenant sign that had been neglected during the forty years of wilderness wandering — a powerful reminder that obedience and consecration must precede conquest. The chapter then records the celebration of Passover at Gilgal in verse 10, the first Passover in the Promised Land, anchoring Israel's identity in redemption before they do anything else. In verse 12, the manna that had sustained them daily in the wilderness ceases, and they begin eating from the produce of the land — a tender sign that God's provision shifts with every new season of life. Joshua 5:9 (BSB)
"Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So that place has been called Gilgal to this day."
God is in the business of rolling away old shame and reproach from His people. Whatever identity of failure, slavery, or wandering has clung to you, God desires to call you by a new name and a new standing before Him. Gilgal is a place of fresh starts — and God can bring you to your own Gilgal moment today.
Joshua 5:10 (BSB)
"On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while the Israelites were camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they kept the Passover."
Before one wall fell or one battle was fought, Israel stopped to remember their redemption through Passover. God calls you to regularly return to the foundation of your salvation before pressing forward into new challenges. Remembering what God has already done for you is not a pause in your progress — it is the very fuel for it.
Joshua 5:12 (BSB)
"And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, the manna ceased. There was no more manna for the Israelites, so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of Canaan."
God's provision is always perfectly suited to where you are in your journey. The manna that was exactly right for the wilderness was not needed in the land flowing with milk and honey. Trust that when something familiar ends in your life, God is not abandoning you — He is transitioning you into a new and richer form of His provision.
Joshua 5:15 (BSB)
"The Commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so."
On the eve of his greatest leadership challenge, Joshua was first called to a posture of humility and worship. God does not need your strategy or your strength nearly as much as He needs your surrender. Whatever challenge stands before you, the most powerful thing you can do is remove your sandals — come before God in reverent submission and let Him be the Commander.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You that You go before me and that You roll away the reproach of my past, just as You did for Israel at Gilgal. Teach me to pause and remember Your redemption before I rush into my battles, and help me to trust that when familiar things end, You are simply leading me into a new and greater provision. Like Joshua, I want to remove my sandals before You — to come humbly and surrendered, knowing that You are holy and that I cannot fight what lies ahead in my own strength. I choose today to worship before I war, and to trust that You are already working in ways I cannot see. In Jesus name, Amen.
