Joshua — Chapter 6 (BSB)
Chapter Overview
Joshua 6 records one of the most dramatic military victories in all of Scripture — the fall of Jericho — accomplished not by human strategy but by divine command. Beginning in verse 1, Jericho is described as completely shut up against Israel, a fortified city that seemed humanly impossible to conquer. Yet God gives Joshua a remarkable battle plan (vv. 2-5): march around the city once daily for six days, with priests carrying the ark of the covenant and blowing ram's horns, and on the seventh day march around seven times, blow the trumpets, and shout. The obedience of the people is striking — Joshua commands them to remain completely silent until the appointed moment (vv. 10-11), a picture of disciplined trust in God's word over human instinct. When the seventh day comes and the shout rises, the walls fall flat (v. 20), and Israel takes the city — with the sole exception of Rahab and her household, who are spared because of the scarlet cord she hung in her window (vv. 22-25). For the individual believer today, this chapter is a powerful reminder that God's methods often defy logic, obedience is the pathway to breakthrough, and no wall in your life is too strong for the Lord to bring down.

Joshua 6:2 (BSB)
"And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered Jericho into your hand, along with its king and its mighty men of valor."
Notice that God speaks of the victory in the past tense — 'I have delivered' — before a single step has been taken. This is the language of faith: God declares things done before they appear in the natural. When you are facing something that feels impossible, ask yourself whether you are trusting what God has already declared over your situation, or only what your eyes can currently see.
Joshua 6:10 (BSB)
"But Joshua had commanded the people: “Do not give a battle cry or let your voice be heard; do not let one word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you to shout. Then you are to shout!”"
Silence in the face of an overwhelming obstacle takes extraordinary trust. The people could not strategize aloud, complain, or question — they simply had to march and wait. God sometimes calls you into seasons of quiet obedience where you must hold your words and simply keep moving forward in faith, trusting that His timing is perfect.
Joshua 6:16 (BSB)
"After the seventh time around, the priests blew the horns, and Joshua commanded the people, “Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!"
The shout came on the seventh day — after six full days of faithfully doing what God said without visible results. Breakthrough often comes at the end of persistent obedience, not the beginning. This verse invites you to keep going even when nothing seems to be changing, because the wall may be about to fall.
Joshua 6:20 (BSB)
"So when the rams’ horns sounded, the people shouted. When they heard the blast of the horn, the people gave a great shout, and the wall collapsed. Then all the people charged straight into the city and captured it."
The walls did not crumble — they fell flat, suddenly and completely, exactly as God had promised. What God says He will do, He does fully and without compromise. This moment is a declaration that when you align your life with God's word and act in obedient faith, His power will accomplish what no human effort ever could.
Joshua 6:25 (BSB)
"And Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her father’s household and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent to spy out Jericho. So she has lived among the Israelites to this day."
Rahab — a Canaanite woman with a broken past — is preserved, welcomed, and woven permanently into the story of God's people. Her faith, expressed through a simple act of trust (the scarlet cord), became the ground of her salvation. This is a profound encouragement that no background, no shame, and no past disqualifies you from the grace and rescue of God.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the reminder in Joshua 6 that You are the one who fights my battles and brings down every wall. I confess that I often lean on my own understanding and grow impatient when I cannot see results — forgive me for the times I have doubted Your timing and Your ways.
