Crossing Over: Following God into the Impossible
Joshua — Chapter 3 (ESV)
Chapter Overview
Joshua 3 records one of the most dramatic moments in Israel's history — the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land. As the chapter opens in verses 1-4, Joshua leads the people to the banks of the Jordan and instructs them to watch for the ark of the covenant, the visible symbol of God's presence, and to follow it into unknown territory. Beginning in verse 5, the people are called to consecrate themselves, because God is about to do something extraordinary among them. The moment the feet of the priests carrying the ark touch the water (v. 15-16), the Jordan — swollen and flooding at harvest time — stops flowing and stands in a heap, allowing the entire nation to cross on dry ground. This miracle deliberately echoes the parting of the Red Sea, confirming Joshua's authority and assuring Israel that the same God who delivered them from Egypt now fights for them in Canaan (v. 7). For the individual believer today, this chapter is a powerful reminder that God's presence leads the way, that stepping out in faith often precedes seeing the miracle, and that He is fully capable of making a way where there seems to be no way.
Key Verses
Joshua 3:3 (ESV)
""As soon as you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place and follow it.""
The ark represented the very presence of God going before the people into the unknown. This verse is a personal invitation to you — before you move, look for where God is already moving and follow Him. Your job is not to lead the way, but to follow the One who already knows what lies ahead.
Joshua 3:5 (ESV)
""Then Joshua said to the people, 'Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you.'""
Before the miracle came a call to holiness and preparation. God invites you to consecrate yourself — to set aside distractions, sin, and self-reliance — because He is preparing to do something remarkable in your life. Expectation and consecration go hand in hand; wonder follows surrender.
Joshua 3:7 (ESV)
""The LORD said to Joshua, 'Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.'""
God personally affirmed Joshua's calling and promised His continuous presence. This is a reminder that God does not abandon His people when leadership changes or seasons shift — He is the same God across every chapter of your life. Whatever new territory you are stepping into, He is with you just as surely as He was with those who came before you.
Joshua 3:13 (ESV)
""And when the soles of the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap.""
The miracle was conditional on the priests actually stepping into the water — the parting did not happen before they moved, but as they moved in obedience. Faith in your own life often works the same way; God's provision and power frequently meet you at the point of your obedient step. He is Lord of all the earth, fully able to hold back every flood that stands between you and what He has promised.
Joshua 3:17 (ESV)
""Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground, until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.""
The priests stood firm — unmoved — in the middle of the riverbed while the entire nation crossed safely. This pictures how God's presence holds steady in the very center of your storm or transition, giving you firm ground to walk on even when everything around you seemed impossible. God does not just part the way; He stands in it with you until you have completely passed through.
Main Themes
- Following the presence of God into the unknown
- Obedient faith that steps before it sees
- God making a way through the impossible
Discussion Questions
- Is there a Jordan River in your life right now — a place where God seems to be calling you forward but the way still looks impossible to cross?
- What might it look like for you to 'consecrate yourself' this week in preparation for what God wants to do next in your life?
Personal Application
Identify one area of your life where you have been waiting for God to act before you take a step of obedience. This week, take that step in faith and trust that His presence goes before you, just as the ark went before Israel.
Set aside a specific time this week to consecrate yourself — confess anything that may be creating distance between you and God, quiet your heart before Him, and approach each day with the expectation that He is about to do something new.
Closing Prayer
Lord, I thank You that You are the God who parts rivers and makes a way where there is no way. Give me the courage to follow wherever Your presence leads, even when the waters have not parted yet, and help me to step forward in faith rather than waiting for perfect conditions. Consecrate my heart today — remove whatever is holding me back from fully following You — and let me walk on the dry ground of Your faithfulness. In Jesus name, Amen.
